Did You Know...?

That Value Analysis Was Developed Back In the 1940's After World War II as a Way to Find Lower Cost but Higher Quality Alternative products and methods. This was Due to the Lack of Material Resources At The End of The War.

Greetings!

Lead, Teach and Coach!

I just read a new study sponsored by Owens and Miner that asked 182 members of the c-suite (CEOs, CFOs, and COOs) how they feel, think, and act on supply chain issues.

The results amazed me! First of all, they don’t think about their supply chain much at all, because their focus is on revenues, marketshare and patient outcomes. Second, they don’t believe that their supply chain have a significant effect on their expense growth, revenues and margins. Third, they don’t have information, data and analytics to help them understand the impact that physician-preference items have on their budget. Lastly, they don’t see the supply chain universe as we do, that can represent up to 40% of their operations budgets.  All they see is just the products that you buy to support their operations, not the labor saving contribution your department has on their hospital’s operations.

Interpretation of results! Your c-suite doesn’t have a clue of what’s going on in your supply chain or its impact on their operations. The conclusion that O&M comes to and I agree with is that if you want to change this paradigm then you need to lead, teach and coach your c-suite members about the mission critical nature of the supply chain on your hospital’s financial results.

This change in their attitude is only possible if you provide them with the information, data and analytics they desperately need to set their priorities and make their decisions. Then, and only then, will they focus on your supply chain issues as aggressively as they do with their patient safety and satisfaction issues.

Making Teams Matter More…

“Build More Energy and Effectiveness When You Get Everyone Engaged”

We meet, we greet, we talk, and then we adjourn, but do we really accomplished everything we want with our value teams?  This is the dilemma of teams!  Everyone has them, but are they effective, or just time wasters?

I just wrote an article in our “Savings Beyond Price™: Advanced Savings Strategies and Solution that Work” monthly newsletter where I tell my readers, “if I could give you only one “big idea” to obtain more savings traction in 2008 my advice to you would be to focus your efforts on improving your value teams’ operating excellence, since value teams are the birthplace for all new super-sized savings ideas. This can only be accomplished if you build more energy and effectiveness into your teams by getting everyone engaged.

Getting everyone engaged starts with changing the organizational structure of your teams.  If you have a team that still looks and acts like a committee -- as most hospitals do -- then you don’t have a team structure, you have a committee structure.  The first step in reorganizing your value teams is to have one team leader, one facilitator and one recorder and no more than 10 team members. If you have a team with more then 10 members, cut your membership down to this optimal size for effectiveness and efficiency.

Next, you must add to your team a Champion (or administrative representative) appointed by your CEO whose job it is to clear roadblocks, solicit buy-in from stakeholders, push the team to identify innovative solutions, and stay involved until each and every project is implemented. Champions see their role as more than overseeing the team; they see it as overseeing the organizational changes that need to be made in order for your healthcare organization to be successful.

Lastly, you must turn your 10 team members into project managers who are responsible for the successful completion of all of your projects. These are the people who do the hard work for your value team from conception to implementation of your projects.  They aren’t passive, but active participants in your value analysis process therefore insuring that the right decisions will be made by your value team.

As you can see, this was just a quick 1-2-3 tutorial on how you can get started to have more savings traction in 2008 by having your value team members more fully engaged in your team process. By doing so you will find that your value teams are more energized, animated and much more productive than ever before.
