Greetings!
Getting the Edge!
We are seeing in our consulting practice that
some supply chain professionals think that “getting the edge”
means standardizing on everything that they buy. While on the
surface this seems like a reasonable approach to supply chain
management, it is really counterproductive.
Here’s why!
No product, service or technology fits all customers! If you try to
fit all of your value groups (that is customers with different
needs, wants and requirements) into one big homogeneous group you
are THROWING away your hospital’s limited capital.
The secret to “getting the edge” is to
customize each and every one of your value group’s products,
services and technologies to their exact specifications. For
instance, one of our clients was planning to standardize on a $6,995
defibrillator for all of their departments which would have cost
them $107,942. When we taught them about our concept of
customization vs. standardization, it reversed their thinking. Our
client then decided to give each department exactly what they needed
(no more no less). With this new philosophy, some of their
departments did receive the $6,995 defibrillator, while others
received $5,995, $4,395, and $2,795 defibrillators saving this
client $58,223.
So if you want to get the edge on your
competition, you need to think differently and do differently
starting with customizing all of your products, services and
technologies to your value groups’ dissimilar and divergent
requirements. Trust me they are all different!

Mastering Facilitation Dynamics is More Important Than Ever Before
“Of all the skills you need to master, facilitation should be at the
top of your list”
Ingrid Bens a noted consultant and trainer
tells us that, “Of all the skill sets that support the shift from a
traditional management role to a more collaborative approach, none
is more relevant than that of the facilitator. The beliefs,
behaviors, and practices of facilitation are precisely what all
leaders need to acquire and put into action”.
This is because the old command and control
(you do what I say or else) style of management is gone
forever and a new progressive management style has emerged which
Ingrid calls, “Participation Dynamics.” This permits even
greater levels of involvement and collaboration especially when it
comes to teamwork.
Since our consulting and training practice over
the last 10 years has been focused on teaming, I can speak from
experience when I say that it is more important than ever for
supply chain professionals to master facilitation dynamics, so that
your value teams can reach more stellar levels of performance than
you ever thought possible.
The
key!
We consider a facilitators role on any value team (I hope you have
one) to be, next to your team leader, the most important
leadership position on your team. This is the person who gets your
team unstuck when they hit a wall, arbitrates disputes, and
asks pointed questions to get your team beyond price thinking. All
and all, a facilitator keeps your value team on track, on target and
on budget. Otherwise, your team is at risk of becoming an
unruly, unproductive and uncreative multi-headed monster.
It would take a book length article for me to
teach you all of the skill sets that are needed to be an exceptional
facilitator, but let me give you three big ideas to set you on the
path for a more creative and inspired value team management as
follows:
1.
Train one, two, or more of your supply chain staff to be
facilitators of your value team(s), since they can bring the added
advantage to your team of being a subject matter resource.
2.
Don’t use your hospital’s facilitators for your value teams, unless
they have been trained in the classic tenets of value analysis;
otherwise they will be like a fish out of water.
3.
Have your facilitator’s role expanded beyond just meeting
management, to include problem solving and trouble shooting with
your team members on each and every one of their projects.
Now I have to tell you, these three tips are
only meant to position you to start thinking differently about how
to obtain more involvement and collaboration with your value teams
members. I leave the rest of this journey to you, since of all the
skills you need to master facilitation should be on the top of you
list.
